NATURAL WORLD : BIRDS - PEACOCKS T his large fierce looking bird struts proudly and gracefully with its long beautiful tail feathers trailing behind. Feathers have 'eye spots' in blue, green and yellow if you look at the design. In fact, only male peacocks are colourful and larger in size than the plain brown peahens or the female peacocks. Males use their colours along with loud shrills or calls to attract females who will later lay eggs. Male peacocks open their feathers and dance before it rains because that is their mating season. Both species together are called peafowls. Peafowls build nests in trees but feed on the ground. They can fly short distances and like to wander in open fields. They are omnivores and eat plants, flowers, fruits, insects, reptiles and other tiny animals. They live in hot tropical regions of Asia and Africa.
